May 21, 2003 (MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.) - The days of knowing that much of the information in your computer's address book is stale, wrong or out-of-date are over. Plaxo, Inc. announced today the availability of its free product, Plaxo Contacts 1.0-- easy-to-use software that lets people ensure that the information in their computer's address book is always up-to-date.
People face the increasingly difficult task of keeping a growing mountain of contact information up-to-date. This includes e-mail and regular mail addresses, regular telephone, cell phone, fax and pager numbers as well as instant messenger screen names. It is estimated that half of the contact information in personal and corporate electronic address books is outdated or incomplete. According to the U.S. Postal Service, 37 million families and individuals and 2.4 million businesses in the United States move every year. Research firm NFO WorldGroup estimates a third of all email addresses change annually.
"People increasingly appreciate how technology can be used creatively to help them stay connected to those they care about," said Sean Parker, Plaxo's founder and president. "Plaxo Contacts 1.0 is the perfect tool for everyone who's changed jobs, moved, or has friends or business associates who have."
In developing Plaxo Contacts 1.0, Plaxo drew on feedback from thousands of individual users regarding their experience with the beta version of the product over the past four months. The result is a tool that takes seconds to download and begin using - yet saves hours by eliminating the need to track down the changing contact information of personal and business contacts.
"We've incorporated into our technology the same protections that financial institutions use to keep their transactions secure, so users can be confident about the safety and privacy of their contact information." said Rikk Carey, Plaxo's vice president of product development. As part of its commitment to ensuring the privacy of user data, Plaxo has had its web site and privacy policy reviewed and certified by TRUSTe.
Plaxo Contacts 1.0 works by prompting you to choose people from your address book for whom you want to get updated contact information. It then sends a simple email message on your behalf, allowing your contact to reply either by email or via a secure web site. Plaxo processes the replies and integrates updated information into your address book. If your contact becomes a Plaxo user, you are connected and your address book is automatically updated whenever contact information changes. Plaxo Contacts 1.0 also provides web-based access to your address book information, synchronizes your address book among multiple computers, and is tightly integrated with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express.

Kevin E. Hartz, CEO of Mollyguard, is a typical satisfied Plaxo Contacts user: "Plaxo is appealing to me as it has automated a very tedious process. Previously, the only effective method to keep my contacts updated was through tasking an administrator with performing these updates or spending the hours to do this myself. Plaxo is a unique product which takes care of this for me, quickly and without cost."
Plaxo Contacts works with PDAs and other devices that synchronize with Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. Plaxo is planning to add compatibility with other PIM software in the near future. To download a free copy of Plaxo Contacts or take a tour, visit http://www.plaxo.com
