New survey from plaxo finds people recall low level of personal detail, despite high number of contacts

Respondents more likely to Remember Contact’s Place of Work and if they have a pet than their birth date

October 11, 2005 (MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.) — A survey, conducted recently at SBC Park in San Francisco, provides insight into how well people know their friends and loved ones. For example, in spite of the fact that only 35% of the survey respondents admitted to having forgotten an important birthday, when asked, 54% could not correctly identify a close friend’s birth date. Ninety-one percent of the respondents were able to identify more commonly-shared information, such as a companion’s place of work.

The survey illustrates the difficulty of developing meaningful relationships in comparison to simply expanding a list of acquaintances.

“Though the importance of quality relationships has not diminished, today’s hectic pace of life makes it difficult to recall all the information you ‘should’,” said Ben Golub, president and CEO, Plaxo®, Inc. “The median Plaxo address book contains 389 contacts — very few are able to remember personal details about that many people. Plaxo helps our members to keep track of personal facts. For example, our members store more than 15 million birthdays with us and rely on Plaxo to remind them of the date so that they have a natural and meaningful reason to contact someone.”

Additional survey results include:

Plaxo is used by millions of individuals in over 83 countries, and enjoys a wide following in academia, government, and both small and large businesses, including 98 of the Fortune 100 companies. As Plaxo becomes increasingly popular, people often find that their friends and colleagues are already members, creating a network of people whose contact information is always up-to-date through the seamless address book updating that occurs between linked members. Plaxo not only automatically updates contact information, but it also synchronizes users&rsqupo; calendars, tasks and notes to ensure that people have access to the most current information anywhere, and at all times.
