Plaxo hires first Vice President of Marketing

Web Pioneer, John McCrea, Brings Depth of Marketing and Internet Product Strategy Experience to Plaxo’s Management Team

March 21, 2006 (MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.) — Plaxo®, Inc., creator of the Universal Address Book that keeps over 10 million people in touch with their friends, colleagues, and information, today announced that John McCrea has joined the fast-growing company as its first vice president of marketing. McCrea combines keen insights into market dynamics with hands-on experience building great teams, profitable businesses, strong brands, and loyal customer bases.

McCrea is a seasoned marketing executive and a web pioneer, who has had a significant impact on the evolution of the web as a new medium and as a platform for communication. In 1994, while at Silicon Graphics, he struck the very first website sponsorship deal, and coined the term “Powered by…” as the de facto standard for such promotions. He was the driving force behind SGI’s WebFORCE, the first turnkey web server, launched in January '95, with the tagline “To Author and To Serve;” as well as conceiving of and leading the product management effort for the first WYSIWYG HTML editor, WebMagic, available on the SGI platform almost one year before the introduction of FrontPage by Vermeer. McCrea also championed bringing SGI and Sun together in partnership, resulting in SGI becoming the first platform licensee of Java, and Sun endorsing SGI’s technology for interactive 3D graphics.

“John is an excellent addition to the Plaxo management team,” said Ben Golub, president and CEO, Plaxo, Inc. “This key hire adds to our momentum, as we continue to expand our presence and deliver on our vision of the first truly universal address book service, accessible on any platform, email client, browser, or mobile device. The clear winners will be Plaxo’s members.”

McCrea earned an M.B.A. from Stanford University and an S.B. Humanities from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
