Wayne Velicer

Wayne F. Velicer is the Co-Director of the Cancer Prevention Research Center at the University of Rhode Island and Professor of Psychology. He has published more than 200 papers on a variety of topics in Health Psychology and Behavioral Statistics. In Health Psychology, his contributions include pioneering the application of computer-based (expert system) interventions to health promotion and disease prevention. He is one of the principal developers of the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change. He has been a leader in the development of multiple risk factor interventions. In Behavioral Statistics, his work has focused on factor analysis and component analysis, he pioneered the application of time series analysis and other idiographic methods to the behavioral sciences, and he has refined methods for measurement development. He was identified as one of the highest impact authors in Psychology (average citation per paper) by the major studies in 1992, 1996, and 2003. His current h factor exceeds 50. He has been Principal Investigator or Co-PI on more than $90 million in research grants. He was a contributing author to the 1990 Surgeon General’s Report and is the Editor of the Research Methods volume of the Handbook of Psychology (Wiley) and will serve as an editor again for the 2nd Edition. In 2000, he received the University of Rhode Island Scholarly Excellence Award. He served as President of the Society for Multivariate bExperimental Psychology (2009-10). He has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Western Ontario (London, Canada), Macquirie University (Sydney, Australia), the University of Limburg (Maastrich, The Netherlands), the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia), the University of Marburg (Marburg, Germany), and the Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane, Australia). He is a regular reviewer for more than 20 journals and 6 funding agencies in both the USA and abroad. He has regularly served as an invited speaker for both Behavioral Statistics and Health Psychology topics.
