Mark PalmerExecutive Director, Jessica's Law Now About Me: I (Mark A. Palmer) do remember Oak Ridge Military School and love hear from ORMA Alumni. I had some great and wild times there. The teacher's of Oak Ridge made a major impact on my life. Same for my days at Pitt Community College, East Carolina University and trying get through many challenges college offers. Of my many hats that I have worn; I have worked and been around many well-known people in my life. One thing they all have in common, they are same as anybody else. One of those hats I have never let go of is welfare for children. I am sick and tired of too many victimized children left out to dry because of laws not fully protecting them or judges not enforcing the law. I have worked with sexually abused children and have seen the effects. Words cannot even begin to describe seeing the rape of child’s innocent soul. When their soul is amputated can take a lifetime to repair, if ever? In the past several years, I have given time to push for tougher laws, regarding sex crimes, especially one’s with sexual predators. Jessica’s Law is such a law. This law was named after nine-year-old Jessica Lunsford who was abducted from her home in Homosassa, Florida. She was raped and later murdered by 47-year-old John Couey who lived nearby. Help accomplish this quest; I became part of chain of fighters that have made such a difference. Presently, 44 states show version of Jessica’s Law. Our organization assisting various individuals’ help the remaining six states obtain a version of Jessica’s Law. Since 2005, our organization assisted nine other states obtaining a version of Jessica’s Law. We have assisted with over five hundred cases, in which a victimized or assaulted child needed help. We are part of a larger network of organizations that assist Missing and Exploited Children. Numerous times, I have assisted various media outlets with news stories and personal interviews. In 2009; we changed our organization name to” Jessica’s Law Now.” Jessica’s Law Now, is proactive not reactive, in helping families deal with various issues brought from cases like these. We continually helped steer victimized families and children towards counseling and healing. We fight for harsher laws to make a difference for the welfare of our children. We are pushing for Mandatory Amber Alerts and Caylee’s Law. Many times our laws have dropped the ball, when it comes to protecting our children. I want to help make a positive difference.
