Kin Lane

API Evangelist, Mimeo

My name is Kin Lane and I am a technology professional with a never ending passion for technology, the Internet and everything 2.0. Web application development has captured my attention for the entire last decade. I evolved from developing applications using classic ASP, .NET, ColdFusion, and PHP to development using more portable JavaScript widgets and social applications. All my applications utilize a data back end, either from Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and more recently usage of other data stores such as Amazon SimpleDB, Relational Database or Google Fusion Tables. Databases are the core of my professional existence, I love working with data. It has been that way my entire professional career, although I feel I have taken it down a different road than originally intended. Rather than being a traditional database administrator (DBA), I chose to embrace open data and cloud based data systems . Open, structured and distributed data is the future of computing and application development. Understanding the underlying infrastructure that my applications depend on is very important to me. I feel it has helped my development vision evolve from a traditional 3 tier development methodology to a more distributed approach using popular cloud services available today. In 2009 I moved beyond a traditional IT server environment to a cloud based environment, where I can deploy services that accomplish specific business goals with unlimited bandwidth, processing power, storage and scalability. In addition to understanding and utilizing cloud based infrastructure and platform service, I spend a great deal of time discovering, evaluating and testing latest cloud based software for addition to my cloud toolbox stack. Designing, developing, and deploying online applications is what I do. Taking legacy applications and converting them into self-service and scalable web applications is something I really enjoy. Understanding how an application is assembled and defining the moving parts is critical to moving it forward. Taking a great online application idea and giving it a solid, scalable base to operate from and integrating with top social, and cloud services is key to the next generation of product development. The event and conference industry is a great place to work when it comes technology and putting it to use. I am taking my skills in developing online applications, databases and bundling with cloud services to push the boundary of event technology in 2010. I am really looking forward to how the cloud computing industry, mobile platforms, and structured data plays out in the coming year. These are some evolving technologies I am watching as well as continuing to push my existing skills in web and database online application development in the event tech space. This will definitely be the year that social media and networks are fully recognized in the event space and officially recognized by event managers and owners. I look forward to all the opportunities for growth in 2010.
