Since 1988, John has been Design Principal of McCulley Design, www.mcculleydesign.com, which blends the disciplines of interior, product and graphic design into a strategic brand strategy resource for progressive clients. McCulley also consults with progressive clients in the design of custom residential environments and furniture.
McCulley has received national and international awards of recognition for excellence in design from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), Columbus Society of Communicating Arts (CSCA), International Design (ID) Magazine Annual Review, the Institute of Business Designers (IBD), Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), San Diego Communicating Arts (SDCA), and the Society of Environmental Graphic Designers (SEGD).
John's work has been published in the following journals: American Banking Association Journal, Architecture, Architectural Record, The Architectural Review, The Architecture of Stations and Terminals, Computers in Banking, Contract Magazine, Designing Corporate Identity, Identity, ID Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, Progressive Architecture, TIME, VM+SD, Rob Wellington Quigley: Buildings + Projects, and Visual Merchandising 3.
McCulley is also a founding partner of Muttropolis, a boutique retail destination that caters to lifestyle the upscale pet owner – A place that celebrates the bond between the pets and their parents. Since its opening in November 2002, the boutique has been featured on NBC TODAY SHOW, CBS, and a variety of national and international publications. Muttropolis was awarded Hot Retailer of the Year in 2006 by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). Muttropolis currently has stores at Fashion Island Newport Beach, Cedros Design District Solana Beach and Girard Street La Jolla, CA. Muttropolis' website, www.muttropolis.com, is recognized as one of the industry's most innovative retail site and blog for the pet centric community. In 2007 John McCulley created CULTURE, a brand development division of Carrier Johnson.
Previously to founding McCulley Design, John was a Senior Design Director at Fitch + Richardson Smith, Assistant Professor in Industrial Design at The Ohio State University and Montana State University, Design Instructor in the Industrial Design Department at The University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, and Marketing and Facilities Design Director at Amoco Oil Company.
McCulley has a BFA in Industrial Design and a MFA in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois @ Urbana/Champaign.
John previously served as Board member for the Del Mar TV Foundation, Boys and Girls Club of San Dieguito, La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club, The Rancho Santa Fe Historical Society, and was Chair of the City of Del Mar Design Review Board. He is a professional member of the Design Management Institute (DMI), Industrial Designers of America (IDSA), and the Society of Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD).

Named the "Hottest Retail Concept of the Year" by the International Council of Shopping Centers in 2006, and by Internet Retailer Magazine as one of the "Top 100 Retail Sites in 2009", Muttropolis launched its first store in Solana Beach, California in 2002. WIth Muttropolis' online boutique, www.muttropolis.com, and three stores in operation throughout Southern California. Muttropolis is recognized as the preeminent brand and shopping experience in the rapidly expanding, $43 billion pet industry.

In 1984 McCulley was hired to create Richardson Smith's Retail and Environments Design Division. As Senior Design Director, he was responsible for Design Strategy and Brand Development for Next Generation Concepts for the Limited, Bank One, Chriscraft, IBM, Regal Yachts, Trojan Boats, and a variety of retail enterprises. He grew the division to be ranked as one the Top 10 Retail Design Firms in the USA within 3 years of inception.
