Professional Summary

Rob Pereyda is the vice president of licensing for Crunchyroll K.K., Crunchyroll's Inc.'s wholly-owned subsidiary in Tokyo, Japan, and has been based in Japan since the subsidiary's inception in September 2008. In this function, Rob heads Crunchyroll's worldwide content licensing program, providing leadership and strategy on all aspects of content licensing and related business affairs, including advertising, marketing, and distribution. Prior to his dispatch to Tokyo, Rob served as Crunchyroll, Inc.'s senior director of business development.

In addition to Crunchyroll, Rob is also the owner, administrator, and host of Business in Japan, the largest group dedicated to doing business in, with, and/or about Japan, specifically for English-speaking professionals.

Before Crunchyroll, Rob provided consulting expertise to clients on Japan-related business development matters, focusing on merchandising and intellectual property licensing, closing deals ranging from QSR to publishing to FMCG and other areas.

Previously, Rob served in licensing at Japanese video game giant Capcom, where he revitalized the company's North American book publishing, music, and online licensing initiatives. Rob founded Japanese anime convention Anime Overdose in 2002 and served as its director and chair from 2003 until 2006. Prior to breaking into the entertainment industry, Rob worked in program management and engineering roles concurrent with Japanese communications responsibilities within the manufacturing business.

Rob holds a bachelors degree in chemistry from Santa Clara University. He is a member of the Licensing International Merchandiser's Association (LIMA), the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA), Association International du Film d'Animation (ASIFA), and the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS).

In this leadership role, mission is to take Crunchyroll's licensing program to the next level by cultivating and continuing to grow entertainment relationships in Japan, the United States, and the world.

Acquisition of new, digital simulcast content rights remain highest priority, but methodology to obtaining these rights has evolved. By knowing and carefully understanding our consumer demographics (who we are) and trends (where we are going), efficiency in acquisition and utilization of content has been able to be increased.

In addition to content licensing, related activities, including marketing, distribution, and advertising, remain important and involvement in these areas continues.
Crunchyroll K K / Senior Director
2008 - 2009
Dispatched from head office (San Francsico) to Japan subsidiary (Tokyo) on three-year assignment to help run company from inception and lead Japanese content acquisition activities directly from Japan.

Working directly with Japanese licensors, acquire streaming video licenses, with focus on "simulcast" release of anime on Crunchyroll within one hour of its Japanese broadcast. "Ownership" of entire licensing processes, serving as both a negotiator and "deal desk" for all FOD / sVOD agreements, as well as post-deal integration and marketing support.

Maintain a large "who's who" network of all key players in Japanese entertainment industry, spanning anime, television, film, manga, video games, and merchandise. High-profile closed to-date partnerships to-date include TV TOKYO, Shueisha, d-rights, Aniplex, Fuji Creative Corporation (FCC), Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation (YTV), and many others.

Support US-based advertising sales team by coordinating with Japanese partners looking to advertise in / penetrate overseas market, including sales pitch support.

Early achievements include:
•Supporting transition of site from pure UGC to pure licensed video content through rapid business development, helping to make Crunchyroll largest UGC site ever to make transition
•Originating current sVOD platform, strategically positioning to both consumers and licensors (one of only successful web-based sVOD platforms to-date)
•Drafting mutually fair program license agreement geared specially at Japanese licensors, working directly with outside counsel, enabling current level of partnerships in Japan
